Abstract: Title: Self-sustaining Power Generation System using Inverter based AC Drive The present invention discloses a closed-loop electrical power generation and energy recovery system comprising an energy storage unit, an inverter or variable frequency drive, an AC motor, an alternator, an energy recovery unit and a power distribution unit. The energy storage unit provides initial DC electrical energy to the inverter, which converts the DC electrical energy into controlled AC electrical energy for driving the AC motor. The AC motor mechanically drives the alternator for generating AC electrical energy. A portion of the generated electrical energy is supplied to electrical loads, while another portion is supplied to the energy recovery unit for rectification and conditioning and subsequent supply to the energy storage unit and/or a DC bus. In embodiments, the alternator is brushless and may comprise an air-core configuration and an air bearing and/or active magnetic bearing arrangement for reducing mechanical contact and associated losses. A control unit may regulate motor operation, energy recovery and power distribution based on monitored operating parameters. The system provides a modular architecture for backup, auxiliary, portable and industrial power generation applications.
