Abstract: A computer-implemented method of issuing a witnessed credential to a holder device operated by a user is provided. The method includes sending information-to-be- witnessed from the holder device to a trusted witness component, wherein the holder device holds a wallet credential including a biometrically verifiable data structure (BVDS) as a verifiable attribute, wherein the BVDS was generated using biometric data of the user, the trusted witness component requesting the holder device for a verifiable presentation of the BVDS from the wallet credential, the holder device obtaining subsequently acquired biometric data of the user and presenting the subsequently acquired biometric data, the BVDS, and proof of the BVDS to the trusted witness component, and the trusted witness component: verifying the proof of the BVDS; authenticating the user by matching the subsequently acquired biometric data to the BVDS; and in response to verifying the proof and authenticating the user, issuing a witnessed credential comprising the information-to-be-witnessed as a verifiable attribute to the holder device.
