Abstract: Grippers used on automated sorting lines take a beating. Shredded metal, glass cullet, broken circuit boards — anything a recycling or e-waste facility runs through a robotic arm is, almost by definition, abrasive, and jaw edges dull well before the rest of the machine shows any wear. Operators usually find out a jaw has gone bad the way you'd expect: a part slips out of the gripper mid-cycle. This paper works from a fairly old observation in a new place. Rodent incisors and the teeth of predatory fish like the northern snakehead stay sharp for life because they're not made of one material — a hard outer layer wears more slowly than a softer inner layer, so the edge keeps re-forming itself as the animal uses it. We apply the same bi-layer logic to a gripper jaw insert, and go one step further: a thin conductive trace sits inside the soft layer at a known depth, so when wear reaches that depth the trace breaks and the controller knows the jaw needs replacing — without a camera, without a manual check, without guessing. We lay out the design, a fabrication approach we think is workable with off-the-shelf multi-material printing, and a cycle-testing protocol to check whether grip force actually holds up better than a conventional single-material jaw, and whether the wear signal fires when it's supposed to.
