MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641086000 A) filed by Chennai Institue Of Technology on July 14, 2026, for Self-Powered Energy-Harvesting Air Treatment Apparatus Integrated To Pressure Relief Valves Of Cooking Appliances.
Inventors include Dr. Pavithra S; Dr. Kayalvizhi M; Mr. Tamiziniyan Gajendran; Dr. Nishanthi R; Danish A G; Sanjay N; Preethi S; and Ismail Ridwan S.
The application for the patent was published on July 17, 2026, under issue no. 29/2026.
Abstract: A passive steam-actuated air treatment attachment for pressure cooking appliances is disclosed which comprises a mounting and sealing interface for removable engagement with a pressure cooker steam outlet or whistle stem, a Venturi-profile steam-flow core, an entrainment junction, a filtration chamber, a replaceable bio-filter cartridge, a mixing and recombination chamber and a steam discharge path. During pressure relief, steam emitted from the cooking appliance is accelerated through the steam-flow core to generate a sub-atmospheric pressure zone at the entrainment junction, thereby drawing ambient kitchen air through intake apertures of the bio-filter cartridge without any electrical, mechanical or battery-powered drive. The bio-filter cartridge contains a composite filtration medium comprising immobilised microalgal cells in calcium alginate hydrogel beads and pyrolysed biochar granules. As the entrained air passes through the filtration chamber, particulate matter including PM2.5, volatile organic compounds, odour compounds, carbon dioxide and biological contaminants are removed by impaction, interception, adsorption, biofilm interaction and biological assimilation. The filtered air then merges with the primary steam jet in the mixing and recombination chamber and is discharged upward through the steam discharge path. Further embodiments include cyclonic flow vanes, passive pressure relief passage, visual indicator window, mechanical whistle counter and electronic monitoring subsystem. The apparatus provides automatic source-proximate kitchen air purification synchronized with cooking activity, while maintaining zero-grid-electricity operation and tool-free cartridge replacement.
