MUMBAI, India, Aug. 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641096329 A) filed by Dr. Mahalingam College Of Engineering And Technology on August 10, 2026, for Self-Healing Tribological Coating With Zwitterionic Microcapsules For Wear-Resistant Implant Substra.

Inventors include Harihara Sakthi Sudhan P; and Jayaraj M.

The application for the patent was published on August 21, 2026, under issue no. 34/2026.

Abstract: The invention concerns a self-healing tribological coating for metallic or ceramic implant substrates. The system uses a graphene-reinforced diamond-like carbon matrix containing zwitterionic polymer microcapsules filled with a biocompatible ionic liquid. The coating is graded. When microcracks form under load, nearby microcapsules rupture and release ionic liquid that spreads across the damaged zone. This restores boundary lubrication and slows further wear. Graphene platelets strengthen the matrix and delay crack growth. Zwitterionic chemistry limits early biofouling, a persistent issue in orthopedic device clearance. Bench tests show reduced friction, lower wear, and stable sliding wear conditions. The technology provides an adaptive, damage-responsive surface for long-term articulation in orthopedic and maxillofacial implants which includes hip, knee, spinal, and temporomandibular joint components.
