Abstract: A self-cleaning photocatalytic surface coating for air purification and environmental remediation is disclosed. The coating comprises a semiconductor photocatalyst, preferably titanium dioxide in anatase or anatase-rutile form modified by doping, semiconductor coupling, sensitization, or a co-catalyst to be active under visible light as well as ultraviolet, and a binder, preferably an inorganic silica, silicate, or siloxane binder, that binds the photocatalyst durably to a substrate while resisting the reactive species the photocatalyst generates and exposing the photocatalyst at the coating surface, thereby resolving the conflict between durable binding and retained activity. Upon illumination, the photocatalyst generates reactive oxygen species that decompose contaminants in the adjacent air, including volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, malodours, and microorganisms, and decompose organic soiling on the surface, while a superhydrophilic or superhydrophobic wettability washes or sheds soiling, so the surface both purifies the air and cleans itself. Adherent to glass, ceramic, metal, concrete, and polymer and applied by spraying, dipping, or brushing, the coating provides passive, continuous, sustainable air purification and self-cleaning using only ambient light.
