Abstract: The present invention relates to a plant extract-mediated tin oxide thin film, a gas sensing device incorporating the thin film, and a method for selective detection of hydrogen sulfide gas. A phytochemical-rich plant extract, preferably obtained from Bougainvillea species, is incorporated into a precursor composition containing a tin- containing compound to synthesize a functionalized tin oxide thin film. The phytochemical constituents act as natural reducing, stabilizing, and surface-functionalizing agents that regulate crystal growth, promote oxygen vacancy formation, introduce oxygen-containing functional groups, and modify the electronic properties of the semiconductor material. The functionalized thin film is deposited on a substrate using a thin-film deposition process, preferably spray pyrolysis, followed by thermal treatment and formation of conductive electrodes to fabricate a chemiresistive gas sensor. Upon exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas, interactions between hydrogen sulfide molecules and chemisorbed oxygen species on the functionalized tin oxide surface produce measurable changes in electrical resistance, enabling selective detection of hydrogen sulfide at comparatively lower operating temperatures than conventional tin oxide sensors. The invention provides improved sensitivity, selectivity, response and recovery characteristics, operational stability, and reproducibility while utilizing an environmentally sustainable green synthesis approach. The sensing device is applicable to environmental monitoring, industrial process safety, hazardous gas leak detection, healthcare diagnostics, wearable sensing devices, and Internet-of-Things-based monitoring systems
