MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511003167 A) filed by Ciena Corporation on January 14, 2025, for Selecting A Best Available Precision Time Protocol (ptp) Backup When A Global Navigation Satellite System (gnss) Clock Source Is Unavailable.
Inventors include Sharad Kumar Srivastava; and Ankur Saxena.
The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.
Abstract: SELECTING A BEST AVAILABLE PRECISION TIME PROTOCOL (PTP) BACKUP WHEN A GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM (GNSS) CLOCK SOURCE IS UNAVAILABLE Systems and methods for selecting a backup clock source are provided. In one implementation, a method (140) includes a step (142) of obtaining multiple data sets representing multiple backup clocks in a communications network (50). The method (140) further includes a step (144) of analyzing offset characteristics of the multiple backup clocks in order to select a substitute clock source from the multiple backup clocks to operate as a temporary substitute when a primary source (60) of synchronization for the communications network (50) is unavailable. For each backup clock, the offset characteristics are related to a synchronization offset of the associated backup clock with respect to the primary source (60).
