MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202521078419 A) filed by Shah Dhara Sachin on August 19, 2025, for Scalable Industrial Process For Sustainable Recovery Of Battery-Grade Metals From Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Inventor includes Shah Dhara Sachin.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: A process for recovering battery-grade metals from spent lithium-ion battery black mass is disclosed. The process comprises leaching black mass in a glass-lined reactor using a sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution, followed by solid-liquid separation using an agitated Nutsche filter dryer to remove graphite and steel. The resulting leachate is sequentially treated to selectively precipitate iron and aluminium using sodium hydroxide at pH 8.5-9.0, and copper using sodium metabisulfite at pH approximately 3.5. Cobalt, nickel, and manganese are subsequently separated as salts in the metal separation unit via solvent extraction, and lithium is recovered as lithium carbonate by treatment with sodium carbonate. The process enables selective, staged metal separation with minimal cross-contamination, producing battery- grade metal products suitable for direct reuse in cathode materfial synthesis, in an industrially scalable and cost-effective manner.
