MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621061632 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Bombay on May 14, 2026, for Saccharum Munja Fiber-Reinforced Pla Composite Materials And Method Of Preparation Thereof.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a saccharum munja fibre reinforced PLA (Polyactic Acid) biodegradable, lightweight and cost efficient composite material and a method for preparing thereof. The biodegradable composite material comprises a biodegradable thermoplastic polymer matrix and Saccharum munja fibers reinforced within the biodegradable thermoplastic polymer matrix, whereby the biodegradable thermoplastic polymer matrix and the Saccharum munja fibers are present in a ratio in a range of 9:1 to 1:1. The reinforcement of Saccharum munja fibers within the polymer matrix significantly enhances the interfacial bonding between the reinforcing fibers and the matrix material. This enhanced fiber–matrix adhesion facilitates more efficient stress transfer across the interface. The composite material exhibits superior mechanical properties offering an environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic fiber-reinforced plastics for use in automotive, construction, green packaging, and consumer goods.
