Abstract: ABSTRACT This invention discloses a novel dental instrument the RotaTrim " Designed for the efficient, uniform, and atraumatic trimming of preformed stainless steel crowns used in pediatric and restorative dentistry. The device integrates a can-opener-inspired rotary cutting mechanism with a crown-stabilizing chuck assembly to deliver a precisely controlled, 360-degree circumferential trim of the crown margin in a single rotation of the operating handle. The instrument comprises three principal components: a circular adjustable chuck that securely cradles the stainless steel crown in a fixed orientation; a carbide-tipped rotary cutting wheel mounted at the crown margin level, which orbits the full circumference of the crown as the handle is rotated; and a single rotating crank handle that drives the cutting wheel through an internal gear reduction train, analogous to the continuous rotary action of a manual can opener. An adjustable depth-stop collar allows the clinician to pre-set the exact amount of material to be removed from the crown margin before activation, ensuring consistent and reproducible trimming depth. The RotaTrim eliminates the need for crown scissors, laboratory burs, and separate crimping and finishing instruments in the crown trimming workflow. It produces a smooth, uniform, burrfree crown margin in a single operator action, significantly reducing chair time, operator effort, and the risk of producing sharp or irregular margins that could lacerate the gingiva or compromise the crown-tooth interface. This invention represents a clinically meaningful advancement in the efficiency and precision of stainless steel crown preparation in pediatric dental practice.
