Abstract: A rollback detection and alarm device, comprises a housing to be mounted on a last cabin of a train, a bi-directional motion sensing module to detect speed and direction of movement of the train, a control unit operatively coupled to the motion sensing module, an independent power supply disposed within the housing and electrically isolated from locomotive power systems, an acoustic alarm device, a visual warning indicator, the control unit is configured to continuously monitor output from the motion sensing module, determine whether a retrograde movement of the train exceeds a predetermined speed threshold for a predetermined time duration and automatically activate the acoustic alarm device and the visual warning indicator upon detection of said retrograde movement.
