Abstract: Systems and methods for encoding and decoding a mesh animation. In an example method, information is obtained defining a reference mesh and a dependent mesh. The dependent mesh includes at least three binding vertices. Correspondence information is obtained that can be used to determine, for each of the binding vertices of the dependent mesh in a reference pose, a respective position relative to the reference mesh. For each frame in an animation, an animated pose of the reference mesh is determined, and animated positions of the binding vertices are determined based on the animated pose of the reference mesh and on the correspondence information. A transformation is determined that substantially transforms the binding vertices of the dependent mesh in a reference pose to the respective first animated positions of the binding vertices, and an animated pose of the dependent mesh is determined by applying the first transformation to all the vertices of the dependent mesh.
