Abstract: A retractable claw assembly for a robotic gripper comprises a claw housing having a concealment slot, at least one claw member pivotally mounted within the housing and carrying a pinion gear, and an internal annular ring gear rotatably supported in the housing and internally meshing with the pinion gear. A rotary actuator, coupled directly or indirectly to the ring gear, selectively rotates the ring gear to pivot the claw between a retracted concealed position and an extended gripping position. In a multi-digit embodiment, a common internal ring gear simultaneously meshes with the pinion gears of multiple claw members, enabling synchronized extension and retraction using a single actuator. Optional biasing elements, one-way clutches, and locking detents provide hybrid passive-active actuation and deployment. The assembly provides compact construction, high torque transmission, synchronized operation, protected claw concealment, improved durability, and manipulation for robotic systems applications.
