Abstract: A removable compression sleeve for modulating the firmness of a pillow, and methods of manufacture and of adjusting firmness, are disclosed. The sleeve fits removably over an existing pillow and comprises a temperature-responsive foam layer whose stiffness varies with temperature, softer when warm and firmer when cool, a textile layer enclosing the foam, a structural containment layer that fits tightly over the pillow to externally constrain its deformation, and a closure. The containment layer and the foam layer cooperate so that deformation of the pillow under load is constrained by an amount set by the temperature-dependent stiffness of the foam, whereby pillow firmness is modulated passively, reversibly and externally without inflation, mechanical parts or electronics, retaining the existing pillow and pillowcase. The sleeve may be pre-conditioned by heating or cooling before use. The construction may also be applied to a cushion or mattress.
