Abstract: A regenerative braking system for an electric vehicle includes a leg-operated regenerative braking pedal (28) configured for left-foot operation independently of an accelerator pedal (24) and a brake pedal (26), the regenerative braking pedal (28) including a position sensor (34) configured to measure pedal displacement. A vehicle control unit (16) receives a pedal displacement signal from the position sensor (34) and computes a regenerative braking torque command based on the pedal displacement signal. A motor inverter (18) receives the regenerative braking torque command from the vehicle control unit (16) and applies a corresponding regenerative braking torque to a traction motor of the electric vehicle. A battery management system (20) and motor control unit (50) communicates battery state information and motor state information to the vehicle control unit (16) respectively, and the vehicle control unit (16) limits the regenerative braking torque command based on the battery state information and motor state information. A haptic motor (36) of the regenerative braking pedal (28) gives haptic feedback to the driver when the regenerative braking torque is limited based on the battery state information, motor state information, etc. FIG. 1
