Abstract: A reflective terahertz metasurface device (100) and a terahertz sensing system (500) are disclosed. The reflective terahertz metasurface device (100) includes a dielectric substrate (102), a continuous metallic reflective layer, and an anisotropic metallic resonating layer having a first arc-shaped resonator (106) and a second arc- shaped resonator (108) positioned diagonally within a unit cell (104) to collectively define a discontinuous elliptical split-ring resonator. The anisotropic resonating geometry excites multiple resonant modes that convert a linearly polarized incident terahertz electromagnetic wave into an orthogonally polarized reflected terahertz electromagnetic wave over an operating frequency range of approximately 3.975 THz to 10.4503 THz with a polarization conversion ratio greater than 80% and reaching approximately 99% at multiple resonance frequencies. Variations in the refractive index of an analyte positioned adjacent to the anisotropic metallic resonating layer produce measurable resonance-frequency shifts, thereby enabling refractive-index sensing and identification of edible oils using the same metasurface platform.
