MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641101162 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai on August 21, 2026, for Reconfigurable Protective Helmet.

The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.
Abstract: A reconfigurable protective helmet (100) comprises a central fixed shell portion (104), a first side shell segment (102), a second side shell segment (106), a locking mechanism (110), and a lower shell portion including a chin region (112) and a lower side region (116). The side shell segments (102, 106) are positioned on opposite sides of the central fixed shell portion (104). The locking mechanism (110) retains the side shell segments (102, 106) in an outward riding configuration during use. Upon release of the locking mechanism (110), the side shell segments (102, 106) move inwardly toward the central fixed shell portion (104) along direction (111) so that the helmet (100) occupies reduced lateral space for storage without disassembly. The helmet (100) remains a unitary wearable structure and is re-expandable by outward movement of the side shell segments (102, 106) followed by re-engagement of the locking mechanism (110).
