Abstract: Effective waste management is a critical challenge in modern urban environments, with contamination in recycling streams significantly reducing the efficiency of material recovery processes. Traditional methods, such as manual inspection, are labor- intensive, error-prone, and inefficient. This project introduces an advanced real-time waste contamination detection system that leverages edge computing, computer vision, and deep learning to automate the identification of contaminants in waste collection processes. The system employs high-resolution cameras mounted on waste collection trucks to capture video footage of waste materials. The video data is processed using edge computing devices equipped with deep learning models trained on a specialized dataset that includes various contamination scenarios. A convolution neural network-based model, optimized for real-time object detection, is deployed to identify contaminants such as plastic bags. The use of edge computing ensures efficient on-site processing without the need for extensive data transmission to cloud servers, reducing latency and improving response times. By automating contamination detection, this system enhances the efficiency of recycling operations, reduces reliance on manual inspections, and minimizes the amount of contaminated waste that ends up in landfills. Future advancements may include expanding the range of detectable contaminants and integrating the system with smart city infrastructure for comprehensive waste management solutions.
