Abstract: REAL-TIME INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEM FOR A CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK BUS A real-time intrusion detection system (100) for a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus (106) includes a transmitting node (102), an intrusion node (104), a monitor node (108), a memory (114), and a processor (112). The transmitting node (102) transmits CAN messages having authorized message identifiers, while the intrusion node (104) transmits CAN messages having unauthorized message identifiers or an increased transmission frequency. The monitor node (108) receives the CAN messages, and the processor (112) obtains and compares message identifiers with authorized message identifiers stored in a whitelist, monitors a transmission frequency of the CAN messages, and compares the transmission frequency with a transmission-frequency threshold. Based on the comparisons, the processor (112) determines an unauthorized message identifier or an abnormal flooding condition, classifies the CAN traffic as a spoofing attack or a denial-of-service attack, and generates a corresponding local alert without reliance on an external network or cloud-based processing.
