Abstract: ABSTRACT [0027] A portable real-time system for fusing visible and infrared images is presented that overcomes the common drawbacks of low contrast, spatial distortion, weak texture, and incomplete edge transfer found in earlier methods. Both source images first receive a morphological unsharp-masking enhancement that raises local contrast and sharpens boundaries. The enhanced frames are then decomposed by a lifting wavelet transform into one smooth layer carrying texture information and three detail layers carrying directional edge information. Smooth layers are combined by a mean-weighted rule whose weights are obtained from a morphology-hat transform followed by high-boost and sharpen filtering of the original sources; detail layers are combined by a complementary max-weighted rule that uses the same filter cascade but extracts maximum rather than mean statistics. Inverse lifting reconstruction produces the final fused image. The entire pipeline runs on a Raspberry Pi single-board computer after a single deployment of the compiled program, enabling field operation without an external host. Quantitative evaluation on multiple public image pairs shows consistently higher entropy, visual-information fidelity, Petrovic edge-transfer scores, standard deviation, spatial frequency, and mean gradient than representative spatial- and transform-domain alternatives, confirming simultaneous gains in information content, contrast, texture richness, and edge fidelity while keeping spatial distortion low. The system is therefore suitable for portable surveillance, remote-sensing, and related multi-sensor imaging applications.
