Abstract: Title: Reactive assessment of untreated versus acid activated waste foundry sand The present invention relates to the utilization of WFS as fine aggregate by acidic treatment/activation to arrest the leach out of heavy metals to protect the structure as well as the environment. Three different acids viz., hydrochloric (HC1) acid, sulphuric (H2SO4) acid and orthophosphoric 10 (H3PO4) acid were taken for the activation of WFS. The acids were prepared at constant concentration of 2M each and the treated WFS have mixed at 30wt% partially to the fine aggregate. Among the acids used, H3PO4 exhibited better properties than other resulting in increased surface area, reduced porosity, denser structure with enhanced polymerization. Treated 15 WFS-H3PO4 improved the compressive and flexural strength by 70-90 %. Moreover, leaching of heavy metals were also reduced than untreated WFS
