MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641085296 A) filed by Dr. P. Naveena on July 12, 2026, for Rasagiline Mesylate-Loaded Chitosan Nanoparticle Composition For Enhanced Antidepressant Activity.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical nanoparticle composition comprising rasagiline mesylate encapsulated within chitosan nanoparticles by ionic gelation using sodium tripolyphosphate as a crosslinking agent, comprising: rasagiline mesylate 1 mg/mL; chitosan 1 mg/mL, dissolved in 1% acetic acid; and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) 0.5 mg/mL as an ionic crosslinking agent, wherein the rasagiline mesylate is encapsulated within chitosan nanoparticles to provide a biodegradable nanoparticle formulation. The process for preparing a pharmaceutical nanoparticle composition, comprising: preparing an aqueous acetic acid solution; dissolving chitosan; incorporating rasagiline mesylate; preparing a sodium tripolyphosphate solution; gradually adding the sodium tripolyphosphate solution to the chitosan solution to produce nanoparticles through ionic gelation; separating the nanoparticles; and freeze-drying the nanoparticles to obtain a dry nanoparticle composition. The prepared nanoparticles exhibit nanoscale particle size, spherical morphology, successful drug encapsulation and reduced crystallinity. Computational studies demonstrate favourable interaction of rasagiline mesylate with the serotonin transporter together with stable protein-ligand interactions during molecular dynamics simulation. In vivo evaluation demonstrates improved antidepressant-like activity of the nanoparticle formulation compared with the corresponding pure drug, including enhanced locomotor activity and reduced immobility time in the Forced Swim Test. The nanoparticle composition provides an improved delivery system for rasagiline mesylate and is useful for antidepressant therapy.
