Inventors include Ms. Moumita Banerjee; Dr. Avinash Pawar; Mr. Ranit Bandyopadhyay; Mr. Uday S H; Mr. Chetan Savukar; Mr. Ritesh Das; and Mr. M Irshad Ali.
The application for the patent was published on October 09, 2026, under issue no. 41/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a natural pharmaceutical coating platform derived from the husk or seed coat of Eleusine coracana (ragi). Ragi seed material is treated with an acidified alcoholic medium to promote swelling, followed by decanting and mechanical trituration to isolate seed-coat material. The isolated material is combined with a pharmaceutically acceptable binder and plasticizer to form a spreadable coating composition, which in an exemplary embodiment exhibits a viscosity of about 54-70 mPa.s. The composition is applied to compressed pharmaceutical tablets to provide about 4-5% weight gain and is dried, for example at about 70°C for about 30 minutes. Exemplary diclofenac sodium tablets coated with the composition remained intact for more than one hour in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid and disintegrated within about 30-45 minutes in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer, thereby supporting delayed intestinal release. The coating further provides protective, taste- masking, moisture-resisting and controlled-release functionality while utilizing a renewable agricultural by-product as a functional pharmaceutical excipient.
