Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a quantum key distribution system (100) for cyber security, comprising a photon source module (102) that generates a plurality of quantum states, and a quantum state encoding module (104) that encodes a bit value onto each quantum state using a randomly selected encoding basis. A quantum channel transmission module (106) transmits the encoded quantum states over a quantum channel to a photon detection module (108), which measures each received quantum state using a randomly selected measurement basis. A basis reconciliation module (110) compares the encoding basis and the measurement basis over a classical communication channel and retains a matching bit value as a sifted key, an error correction module (112) corrects a discrepancy therein to obtain a corrected key, and a privacy amplification module (114) distils a secure cryptographic key from the corrected key, storable at a secure key storage module (116) for use by a cryptographic application module (118), thereby enabling detection of an eavesdropper and secure key establishment for cyber security applications.
