Abstract: The present invention relates to Pru-LightSwin, a smart, lightweight, and explainable transformer-based system designed for the automatic detection, classification, and monitoring of cotton plant diseases using images captured from leaves, stems, and plants. The system employs a Swin transformer architecture optimized for computational efficiency, enabling deployment on mobile devices, drones, edge computing units, and other resource-constrained platforms, while maintaining high accuracy across multiple disease categories. The invention integrates a robust pre-processing module that performs image enhancement, normalization, resizing, and data augmentation, ensuring reliable feature extraction even under variable field conditions such as differing lighting, angles, and environmental noise. The extracted features are processed through a classification module trained using supervised deep learning techniques to predict the type and severity of cotton diseases, including early-stage infections, thereby enabling timely interventions and management strategies. A distinctive feature of the system is the explainable AI (XAI) module, which generates attention heatmaps and feature importance visualizations, highlighting regions of leaves and plants that contribute most significantly to the classification results, providing interpretable, trustworthy, and actionable insights to farmers and agronomists.
