Abstract: The invention discloses a continuous, thermally integrated process and system for producing low-sulphur calcined petroleum coke (CPC) from high-sulphur raw petroleum coke (RPC) using a vertically oriented, multi-zone shaft gasifier. The reactor operates under counter-current gas–solid flow, combining drying, devolatilization, oxidation, and reduction in a single unit. Sulphur present in the feed is converted in situ to gaseous compounds which are recovered and as sulphuric acid through wet scrubbing. Catalytic additives comprising manganese, iron, chrome to promote desulfurization and undergo reduction to yield valuable ferroalloys. The process achieves fixed carbon of 95–99 wt%, residual sulphur below 2.5 wt% (corresponding to 50–99% sulphur reduction from the input), and high thermal efficiency through internal heat recovery. The system operates continuously, producing CPC, recoverable sulphuric acid, and metallic by-products in a closed-loop, environmentally compliant configuration suitable for industrial-scale applications.
