Abstract: The present invention deals with the production of tetrafunctional cardanol-hexamine novolae (TCHN) and tetrafunctional cardanol-hexamine resole 10 (TCHR) and their conversion into porous hard foams (TCHNF and TCHRF) using blowing agent, surfactant, cross-linking agent and additives. The properties, viz., density, water contact angle (WCA), oil-absorption capacity, environmental stability and anti-microbial behaviour of hard foams were studied to ascertain their suitability for antimicrobial and oil-absorption applications. The TCHN were 15 synthesized using acid catalysts and TCHR were synthesized using base-catalysts. The curing temperatures of TCHN was found to be in the range at 152°C and that TCHR was observed between at I69°C. The values of WCA of hard foams, viz., TCHNF and TCHRF were observed between 146° and 145°. The oil absorption capacity of hard foams from oil-water mixtures were found about 25 times. The 20 efficiency of reusability of foams was found to be 10 times. The density of hard foams, viz., TCHNF and TCHRF were found to be 0.077 g/cin3 and 0.086 g/cm3, respectively. The chemical and environmental stability of hard foams in acidic media (pH 2-4), alkaline media (pH 10-12) and saline water, exhibit negligible mass loss ( 1%). The zone of inhibition values of tetrafunctional cardanol-hexamine 25 novolac, and tctrafunctional cardanol-hexamine resole foams against E. coli was found to be greater than 13 mm. The zone of inhibition of hard foams against S. aureus and E. cob was found to be greater than 14 mm. the minimum inhibitory concentration of both TCHNF and TCHRF was found to be 250 1..tg/mL for E. coli and 500 1.tg/mL for S. aureus. The present invention is considered as cutting-edge 30 concept in the field of development of bio-based multifunctional polyols and their conversion in to open cell structure foamed products for medical and environmental remediation applications.
