Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing prenal and isovaleraldehyde, comprising the steps (a) bringing a gaseous reactant stream comprising isoprenol, isoamyl alcohol and optionally isovaleraldehyde into contact with a silver-containing heterogeneous catalyst in the presence of molecular oxygen to obtain an isoprenal, prenal and isovaleraldehyde containing product stream; (b) separation of isoprenal, prenal and isovaleraldehyde from the product stream; (c) isomerization of isoprenal, contained in the mixture obtained in step b) to prenal; and (d) separation of prenal and isovaleraldehyde from the mixture obtained in step (c). Isovaleraldhyde can be produced simultaneously with prenal and isoprenal in one production facility in high yield and selectivity in an energy efficient manner.
