Inventors include Dr. Joyshree Barman; Dr. Gaurav Himanta Khaklari; Dr. Prasenjit Talukdar; Dr. Bhaskar Jyoti Saikia; Ms. Ananya Borah; Dr. Chayanika Borah; and Dr. Manuranjan Konwar.

The application for the patent was published on August 21, 2026, under issue no. 34/2026.

Abstract: The invention relates to a microbial process for improving the flow assurance characteristics of waxy crude oil by biologically reducing its pour point and viscosity. The process comprises preparing an anaerobic microbial source from cow dung and fish waste, cultivating a methanogenic bacterial population, and selectively isolating bacterial strains using a mineral salt-, trace element-, vitamin-, and agar-based growth medium. The isolated strains are serially diluted, spread cultured, subcultured on anaerobic slant media, and verified through Gram staining to obtain target bacterial populations. The target bacterial strains are subsequently contacted directly with a waxy crude oil sample under controlled temperature conditions for 1–3 days. Microbial treatment modifies the wax-associated characteristics of the crude oil, reducing the pour point from approximately 33°C to 24°C and thereby improving flow characteristics. The process provides a biologically based approach for mitigating wax- related flow restrictions in crude oil transportation and handling.
