Abstract: There is provided a process for producing rare earth metals (REM). The process comprises subjecting rare earth oxides (REO) or rare earth sulfides (RES) to a pyro- electrochemical reduction in a eutectic molten salt thereby obtaining a pyro- electrochemical reduction product comprising the REM. The pyro-electrochemical reduction product obtained is further subjected to a purification process. A process for converting REO to RES is also provided.
