Abstract: A process for preparing purified e-caprolactam from polyamide 6 comprised in a solid material M, the process comprising preparing an aqueous liquid stream SR comprising e-caprolactam, comprising providing the solid material M; preparing a liquid stream SW exhibiting a water mass flow µW, the stream SW comprising a recycle stream SWR exhibiting a water mass flow µWR and a makeup stream SWF exhibiting a water mass flow µWF; preparing a depolymerization mixture based on the solid material M and the stream SW; subjecting in a chemical reaction unit UR the depolymerization mixture to depolymerization conditions, obtaining a reaction mixture MR comprising e-caprolactam; removing from UR the stream SR exhibiting a water mass flow µR; subjecting the stream SR to depressurization in an evaporation unit UE, obtaining from UE a stream SL comprising e-caprolactam exhibiting a water mass flow µL, and at least one vapor stream SEV exhibiting a total water mass flow µEV; reprocessing the stream SL in a heat-consuming purification and recycle unit UPR, comprising subjecting the stream SL to e-caprolactam purification, obtaining a stream SCPL comprising purified e-caprolactam and at least one stream SWS exhibiting a total water mass flow µWS; providing at least part of the heat consumed in UPR by the at least one vapor stream SEV, obtaining at least one at least partially condensed stream SEL exhibiting a total water mass flow µEL; recycling the at least one stream SWS and the at least one stream SEL as recycle stream SWR, wherein µWS + µEL = µWR; and wherein µEV / µL is in the range of from 0.50 to 0.9 and µWR / µW is in the range of from 0.02 to 0.3.
