MUMBAI, India, Oct. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641119603 A) filed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham on October 06, 2026, for Process For Preparing Expanded Graphite Cathode Material From Spent Lithium-Ion Battery And Product Thereof.
Inventors include Mani, Ulaganathan; Prakash, Athulya C; and Rajan, Radhika.
The application for the patent was published on October 09, 2026, under issue no. 41/2026.
Abstract: A process for preparing expanded graphite cathode material from spent lithium-ion battery and product thereof is provided. The process includes recovery of graphite from spent lithium-ion cells after cell discharge via alkaline electrolysis with NaOH and manual disassembly. The recovered graphite is subjected to probe sonication under solvent co-diffusion for various durations (5, 10, 30, and 60 min) to study the effect of structural modification on its electrochemical performance. The resulting graphite is utilized as a cathode material in an aqueous zinc-based electrochemical cell. The structurally modified graphite facilitates reversible accommodation of anionic species during electrochemical cycling. The disclosure provides a sustainable route for valorizing spent battery graphite while providing a useful carbon-based cathode material for rechargeable aqueous zinc-based energy-storage systems.
