MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641115250 A) filed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham on September 25, 2026, for Process For Preparing Activated Carbon And Electrodes Comprising The Same For Energy Storage Applications.

Inventors include Kandasamy, Elango; Muraleedharan, Swathi; and Kottukkal Sushil, Sushmita.

The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a process for preparing activated carbon and to activated carbon obtained thereby. The process comprises pre-treating a carbonaceous material with water, drying the pre-treated material, thermally activating the dried material under an inert atmosphere in the absence of a chemical activating agent, cooling the activated material, washing the cooled material sequentially with water and an alcohol, and drying to obtain activated carbon. The activated carbon exhibits a high specific surface area, controlled pore volume, mesoporous structure, predominantly amorphous carbon framework with partial graphitic domains, and oxygen- containing surface functional groups, making it suitable for electrochemical applications. The present disclosure further provides an electrode comprising the activated carbon, a conductive carbonaceous material, a polymeric binder, and a current collector, along with a method for preparing the electrode by forming a homogeneous slurry, coating the slurry onto the current collector, and drying the coated substrate. The activated carbon and electrode are particularly useful for high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices, including supercapacitors.
