MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611065916 A) filed by Panjab University on May 25, 2026, for Process For Formulation Of Non-Toxic Nano-Sized Biomelanin Hair Colouring Composition.
Inventors include Sharma Prince; George Annu; and Capalash Neena.
The application for the patent was published on July 17, 2026, under issue no. 29/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a time efficient process for formulation of a hair colouring composition containing nano-sized biomelanin for dyeing virgin grey hair within 40-50 minutes. The present invention particularly relates to the enzymatic synthesis of nano-sized biomelanin (250-300nm) using recombinant laccase (RhLacc) with L-DOPA as substrate. The nano-sized biomelanin gives the advantage of easy penetration/deposition into hair follicles, better colour quality, enhanced durability and wash resistance of the hair colouring composition into the hair follicle. The process of synthesis of nano-sized biomelanin, its purification and subsequent formulation of hair colouring composition is completed in less than an hour (45-50 minutes). The hair coloring composition provides broad-spectrum intrinsic UV protection (SPF 50.42 and PA rating ++++ ), along with shielding the scalp which is highly photosensitive. The hair colouring composition is nontoxic showing in vitro biocompatibility using human adult dermal fibroblast cell line.
