Abstract: This invention provides a computer-based technique and system that enables us to recover the logical tabular row structure of a printed multi-column document where we have only the bounding polygons that are output from an optical character recognition (OCR) engine. The present invention doesn’t use ruling lines, grid templates, previously known column count, or any other document-specific training data to derive this structure. The primary innovation found in this invention is the Adaptive Median Gap Band Partitioning algorithm. The present invention generates band height (B) from the document-specific spatial characteristics of the word tokens (polygonal bounding boxes) in the actual document image being analyzed. The algorithm is automatically calibrated across different scan resolutions; print densities; font sizes; and card to camera distances without having to adjust any parameters. This invention relates to a method of performing independent Document Layout Analysis for any structured multi-column documents including, but not limited to, governmental photo ID cards, exam mark sheets, medical laboratory report cards, land survey record cards, financial statement tables/columns, captured using mobile devices in the field. The method does not rely on any upstream classification and/or agricultural context/and or downstream recommendation engine.
