Abstract: ABSTRACT PROACTIVE SELF-HEALING IN PACKET-SWITCHED NETWORKS USING BOUNDED HOP-CHAIN VECTORS A method and network system (100) for proactive self-healing in a packet-switched network are disclosed. A source router (102) generates a monitoring packet (110) that is not user data and that carries a bounded hop-chain vector (114). At each of a plurality of intermediate routers (104) along a first path (150), a local trend estimate of a local forwarding condition is computed, quantized into an entry (116) comprising a trend code (118) and a forecast-horizon value (120), and appended to the hop-chain vector (114). When the hop-chain vector (114) is full, an oldest entry (116) is removed so that the hop-chain vector (114) remains a fixed size independent of path length. At an evaluation point (140), a degradation trend spanning more than one hop is detected from the accumulated entries (116), and a flow is switched from the first path (150) to an alternate path (152) before a failure of the first path (150) occurs.
