Abstract: A system (100) for monitoring and controlling a rotating machine uses its variable frequency drive (102) as an exciter. During steady operation, an edge health node (120) superimposes a bounded swept-sine perturbation on the drive torque reference, computes the frequency response function between the drive-estimated torque and bearing-housing vibration, and extracts natural frequencies, damping ratios and temperature-compensated stiffness changes that reveal loosening, cracking and wear. These are fused with envelope-spectrum bearing features into a Mahalanobis health index, from which a particle filter estimates the remaining useful life with its confidence bound. When this bound is shorter than the time to the next planned maintenance window from the maintenance management system (132), an operating- point limiter (152) reduces the speed or load reference, using the speed and load dependence of bearing life, so that the machine safely reaches the window. A safety supervisor (128) bounds and aborts the excitation
