Abstract: A post-operative patient recovery monitoring system and method thereof are disclosed. The system (100) comprises a first removable smart insert (102) and a second removable smart insert (104) placed at respective skeletal structures or prosthetic components (202, 204) associated with a joint. Each removable smart insert includes a biocompatible housing (106A, 106B), sensors (108A, 108B), local memory (110A, 110B), energy source (112A, 112B), and telemetry circuit (114A, 114B). A calibration unit (124) generates combined skeletal reference data from reference data received from the removable smart inserts. An external receiver (126) retrieves sensor data and transmits the sensor data to a server system (132). The method (500) receives reference data, generates combined skeletal reference data, stores sensor data, retrieves sensor data, transmits sensor data, and determines relative joint motion.
