Abstract: ABSTRACT The present disclosure relates to portable handheld apparatus and methods for currency authentication. The apparatus (100) includes a tri-wavelength light emitting diode array (102), a magneto-resistive sensor (104), a complementary metal-oxide- semiconductor image sensor (106), a non-volatile memory (108), and a microcontroller (110). During a sweep motion , the microcontroller (110) activates the tri-wavelength light emitting diode array (102) in a time-multiplexed sequence, energizing only one wavelength at any instant. The microcontroller (110) computes a near-infrared reflectance ratio (218) by dividing reflectance signals at two near-infrared wavelengths, comparing the result against reference values in non-volatile memory (108) to determine paper composition. The microcontroller (110) further correlates the spatial position of a peak magnetic field strength from the magneto-resistive sensor (104) against the spatial position of a security thread (214) detected in the captured image, wherein spatial misalignment beyond a threshold indicates a counterfeit currency note.
