The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: Capnography is a non-invasive patient monitoring tool that measures the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaled breath, offering vital information about the patient's ventilatory function, metabolism, and circulation. In contemporary healthcare, capnography has become a vital tool in anaesthesia, emergency, and critical care medicine. However, the majority of the capnography systems available in the market are quite costly, bulky, and require a constant power supply, making them suitable only for well-equipped hospitals. This project work describes the design and development of a portable, low-cost capnography system for improving accessibility in resource-poor and remote areas. The proposed system consists of a miniature CO2 sensor, a microcontroller-based processing module, and a display module for continuous monitoring of end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) concentration in real time. The proposed system is designed to provide early respiratory anomaly detection and improve patient safety in emergency, home care, and rural healthcare settings. Moreover, the proposed capnography system focuses on being portable, power-efficient, and user-friendly, making it possible to continuously monitor breathing without relying on complex infrastructure. The combination of efficient signal processing algorithms enables breath-by-breath analysis with minimal noise and motion artifacts. The proposed system has the potential to enable clinical decision-making and improve response time during respiratory emergencies by providing reliable performance at an affordable price, making advanced patient monitoring possible in decentralized healthcare settings.
