MUMBAI, India, June 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411089564 A) filed by Birla Institute Of Technology And Science, Pilani on November 19, 2024, for Porous Semi-Circular Cylindrical Floating Breakwater.
Inventors include Santanu Koley; Morapakala Srinivas; Amya Ranjan Ray; Rajdip Dey; and Santanu Kumar Dash.
The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.
Abstract: The Porous Semi-Circular Cylindrical Floating Breakwater structure is provided with two identical porous cylinders 101, 102 with different porosities, two rectangular shape base walls 103 and crowned with a porous structure having semi-circular type top surface 105. The two rectangular walls 103 are mounted horizontally over the identical cylinders 101 and the semicircular top 105 connects the other end of rectangular supports. The semicircular top 105, the rectangular walls 103 and the identical cylinders 101,102 are either welded or bolted together. The breakwater can increase wave dissipation rate up to 94%. This is achieved using composite porous structures having different pore shapes and sizes. The fluid flow through the porous medium is governed by Darcy’s law where the flow rate depends on pressure and resistance.
