Abstract: The pollution-absorbing smart pavement system is designed to reduce the pollution emitted from vehicles and industries in urban areas, by combining photocatalytic materials, activated carbon filters and real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) monitoring system. The main aims of this invention are to passively remove harmful pollutants like NOx, SOx, CO and particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) from the ambient air, monitor and detect the air quality in real-time through embedded sensors and supply relevant information in a real-time manner to the municipal government for environmental management. In this system, the surface of the pavement is treated with aggregates with titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated and layers of activated carbon that neutralize pollutants in contact with them, using sunlight and UV lights as the activation factor. An array of gas sensors (MQ series, PMS5003) is installed in the pavement structure, a microcontroller that continuously samples pollutant concentrations, and also calculates an AQI score. This data is communicated wirelessly using IoT protocols and is presented in real-time to a cloud-based dashboard with alerts. In field testing, significant local reductions in NOx concentrations and PM2.5 were measured compared to traditional pavement surfaces. The embedded sensing network was stable under different climate conditions like temperature and humidity. This combination of passive pollutant absorption and active pollutant monitoring can result in a "two-for-one" solution to both help remove pollutants at source and alert stakeholders when interventions are required. In summary, the invention offers a scalable, cost-efficient, and maintenance-friendly approach to enhancing urban air quality, supporting the creation of smart city infrastructure and sustainable environmental management.
