Abstract: Plant-derived vaccines, also known as edible vaccines, represent an innovative and cost-effective approach to immunization. These vaccines are produced by genetically engineering plants to express antigenic proteins that trigger an immune response when consumed or administered. Common plant systems used include tobacco, potato, banana, and rice. Unlike conventional vaccines, plant-derived vaccines eliminate the need for complex purification, cold storage, and sterile injection procedures, making them especially suitable for developing countries. They offer advantages such as safety (no risk of contamination with human pathogens), scalability, and ease of production. Additionally, oral delivery enhances patient compliance and reduces medical waste. Despite these benefits, challenges such as dosage standardization, regulatory approval, and stability of antigens remain. Ongoing research aims to improve expression levels and ensure consistent efficacy. Overall, plant-derived vaccines hold significant promise for future global vaccination programs, particularly in resource-limited settings.
