MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641093019 A) filed by Chennai Institute Of Technology on July 31, 2026, for Plant-Derived Co/N-Doped Fluorescent Carbon Dots And Process For Their Preparation.

Abstract: The titled invention discloses cobalt (Co) and nitrogen (N) co-doped fluorescent carbon dots (Co,N-CDs) and a process for their preparation. The Co,N-CDs are synthesised by a green, one-step hydrothermal method using an aqueous extract of Sesbania grandiflora a flavonoid- and polyphenol-rich edible leguminous plant not previously reported as a carbqn dot precursor as the carbon and nitrogen source. The one-pot synthesis uses a renewable biomass precursor and mild conditions, yielding a low-cost multifunctional material. The Co, N-CDs have an average particle diameter of approximately 6 nm, as confirmed by TEM, exhibit an amorphous non-crystalline structure as confirmed by SAED analysis, and exhibit bright blue photoluminescence, with surface hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amine functional groups. The Co, N-CD colloidal dispersion appears as a brown solution under ambient daylight and emits bright blue fluorescence under UV illumination. The Co, N-CDs are applied as: (i) a selective fluorescent probe for the detection of antibiotics; and (ii) a fluorescent anticounterfeiting security ink, enabling covert document and product authentication. The invention thus provides a combined remediation-and-monitoring platform that advances environmental nanotechnology beyond existing single- function carbon dot systems.
