MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641113106 A) filed by Dr. M. G. R. Educational & Research Institute on September 21, 2026, for Plant-Derived Carbon Electrode And Fabrication Method For Sustainable Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage Applications.
Inventor includes P. Selvaraj.
The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: Disclosed is a plant-derived carbon electrode for a lithium-ion battery comprising a copper foil current collector and an electrode layer comprising a plant-derived activated carbon material, a binder, and a conductive additive. The plant-derived activated carbon material is obtained from carbon-rich plant biomass by pre-treatment, carbonization under an inert atmosphere, activation, and particle-size reduction. The activation forms a porous carbon structure comprising micro- and mesopores, with the activated carbon material having a particle size of about 20–60 microns and a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of about 800–2000 m²/g. The electrode layer comprises about 80–90 wt% of the activated carbon material, about 5–10 wt% of the binder, and about 5–10 wt% of the conductive additive. The porous carbon structure facilitates lithium-ion storage through intercalation, surface adsorption, and pore filling, thereby providing effective lithium-ion diffusion pathways through the electrode layer.
