The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a plant bioactive-loaded biodegradable food coating composition for improving the quality, safety and shelf life of food products. The composition comprises a biodegradable polymer matrix, a plant-derived bioactive component and optionally a foodcompatible plasticizer or carrier. The biodegradable polymer matrix may comprise chitosan, alginate, starch, cellulose derivatives, pectin, gelatin, pullulan or combinations thereof, while the plant-derived bioactive component comprises one or more phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, essential oils or other phytochemicals obtained from plant materials or plantderived by-products. The resulting formulation is applied onto the surface of a food product by dipping, spraying, brushing or other suitable coating techniques to form a biodegradable protective layer. The coating provides antimicrobial and antioxidant activity and acts as a barrier against moisture, oxygen and external contamination, thereby reducing microbial growth, oxidation and quality deterioration during storage. The coated food product may be evaluated for microbial load, physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant activity, sensory properties and shelf-life extension. The invention provides a natural and biodegradable alternative to conventional synthetic preservatives and non-biodegradable food packaging materials and is applicable to fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, bakery products, dairy products and other perishable or semiperishable food products.
