Abstract: [045] A piezoresistive microcantilever biosensor system for quantitative biomolecular detection is disclosed. The system includes a microcantilever anchored to a silicon substrate and having silicon oxide layers, a polysilicon piezoresistive element, a functionalizable gold-containing surface layer and electrical contacts. A biomolecular receptor is immobilized on the surface layer. Binding or adsorption of a target biomolecule generates surface stress and bends the microcantilever, thereby stressing the polysilicon piezoresistive element and producing a measurable change in electrical resistance. The layered structure provides electrical isolation between the piezoresistive element and the metallic surface coating, while the cantilever may include stress-concentrated regions for enhanced displacement sensitivity. Electrical characterization establishes resistance behaviour, and the differential resistance change is correlated with biomolecular interaction or concentration. The system thereby provides an integrated electrical transduction platform for sensitive, compact and quantitative biosensing. Accompanied Drawing [FIGS. 1-5]
