MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641076077 A) filed by Kalasalingam Academy Of Research And Education on June 19, 2026, for Photochromic Sunlight-Responsive Exterior Wall Paint For Dynamic Aesthetic And Thermal Regulation.
Inventors include Dr. T. Arunprasath; V. Krishnamoorthy; Dr. Pallikonda Rajasekaran; and Dr. R. Kottaimalai.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: The titled invention discloses a unique formulation for exterior wall paint that changes color when subjected to sunlight. By integrating micro-encapsulated photochromic pigments (2) into a UV-resistant and weatherproof base (3), (4), this paint offers 10 aesthetic variation while also improving thermal efficiency in buildings. The invention comprises a smart paint composition containing microencapsulated photochromic pigments (2) dispersed within a UV-stabilized binder matrix (3). The photochromic pigment system (1) reversibly changes color upon exposure to ultraviolet sunlight and returns to its original state in the absence of UV radiation, thereby enabling 15 dynamically responsive building facades. The microencapsulated photochromic pigments (2) protect the pigments from UV degradation, moisture, oxidation, and pollutants, ensuring long-term durability and repeatable performance. The paint composition further includes UV inhibitors and weather stabilizers (9) for improved outdoor resistance and compatibility with concrete and plaster compatible adhesion 20 interface (10). During intense sunlight exposure, the active photochromic coating layer (6) transitions toward lighter reflective shades forming the thermal reflective layer (8) that reduces solar heat absorption and improves indoor thermal comfort
