Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of biodegradable antimicrobial coating compositions. More particularly, the invention discloses a photo-activated eco-friendly antimicrobial coating composition comprising green-synthesized flower-like zinc oxide nanoparticles prepared using Cuscuta reflexa stem extract and chitosan extracted from crab shell waste, together with a method for preparing the same. The zinc oxide nanoparticles possess an average crystalline size ranging from about 14 nm to about 16 nm and are incorporated into a chitosan matrix to form a biodegradable antimicrobial coating. The coating exhibits photo-activated antimicrobial activity upon ultraviolet (UV) irradiation against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli. The formed coating has an approximate thickness ranging from about 286 nm to about 298 nm. The disclosed composition is useful for providing antimicrobial protection on various substrates, including food-contact surfaces, packaging materials, medical devices, and other biodegradable coating applications.
